Trigger finger, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis, is a condition that affects the tendons in the hand that control the bending and straightening of the fingers and thumb. When this condition occurs, you may experience a sensation of catching, locking, or stiffness when attempting to move your fingers. This discomfort can make it challenging to perform everyday tasks and cause pain in the affected area. Trigger finger commonly affects the little finger and thumb but can impact any finger. When the thumb is involved, the condition is called the trigger thumb.

Trigger finger can be particularly problematic for individuals who engage in repetitive hand activities, such as gripping or pinching, which may worsen the symptoms over time.

What are the Symptoms of Trigger Finger?

The symptoms of the trigger finger develop gradually, often without a specific cause. They include a painful bump at the base of the affected finger or thumb, a catching or popping sensation, and stiffness. This condition occurs when the sheath surrounding the tendon becomes inflamed, leading to restricted movement. Repetitive hand movements and certain medical conditions can contribute to its development.

How is Trigger Finger Treated?

The treatment for the trigger finger depends on the severity of the condition. In mild cases, nonsurgical treatments can often provide relief. Your doctor may recommend medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), to reduce pain and inflammation. Resting the affected hand and avoiding activities that worsen the symptoms can also be helpful. Sometimes, a splint may keep the affected finger straight, allowing the tendon to rest and heal. Gentle stretching exercises may also be recommended to improve mobility and prevent stiffness. Our dedicated team may also recommend physical therapy to work on strength, tension, and retaining motion in the hand and wrist.

Corticoid injections may reduce inflammation and improve tendon movement for more persistent or severe cases of trigger fingers. These injections can provide significant relief for many patients, but in some cases, symptoms may return over time.

If nonsurgical treatments are ineffective or if the condition is severe, surgery may be recommended. During the procedure, a small incision is made near the base of the affected finger, allowing the surgeon to release the narrowed portion of the tendon sheath. This allows the tendon to glide more freely, resolving the symptoms.

Not only is Dr. Denehy an outstanding surgeon but he has an amazing bedside manner. We went to see if after consulting another surgeon and liked what he had to say. My mother needed a full knee replacement at 85 years old. I was concerned with her being put under general anesthesia due to complications for someone her age. Dr. Denehy suggested a spinal which was the perfect solution! The other surgeon stated my mother would have to go to rehab for two weeks, Dr. Denehy said she could go home as long as someone stayed with her for 48 hours. He is concerned with possible infection at a rehab. The nurses at Baptist raved about him, said he had the lowest infection rate in the hospital and they would recommend him for their family. Anyway, 9 weeks post opt, my 85-year-old mother has completely recovered and no longer needs to do physical therapy. 2 weeks post-op she could walk without her walker
