- Stiffness or discomfort after sitting or being inactive
- Worsening pain at night, especially when rolling onto the painful side
- Swelling over the outside of the hip (less common but possible)
Understanding Hip Bursitis (Trochanteric Bursitis)
Hip bursitis occurs when the bursa, a small, fluid-filled sac that cushions the hip, becomes inflamed. This often leads to pain on the outside of the hip that may radiate down the thigh and worsen with walking, climbing stairs, standing, or lying on the affected side. You might notice tenderness over the hip, stiffness after inactivity, or discomfort at night. The condition can develop due to repetitive stress or overuse from activities like running or cycling, direct trauma such as a fall, muscle imbalances or tightness, leg length differences, underlying arthritis, or prolonged pressure on the hip. Understanding these symptoms and causes helps guide effective treatment to reduce pain and restore mobility.
