Meet Massiah Shively, a determined student-athlete from Green County High School with a true love for football. Massiah has always been committed to developing not just his athletic skills, but his mental and emotional strength as well—so much so that he stayed back a year in eighth grade to grow both on and off the field.
His junior year was off to a strong start, full of energy, grit, and passion. But during a high-stakes game against a rival team, one moment changed everything. In the snap of a finger, Massiah went down after a devastating hit. He immediately knew something was wrong. Following his injury, Massiah and his family were referred to Dr. Owen McGonigle, Sports Medicine Surgeon at Bluegrass Orthopaedics, and Cheslee Bloyd, PA-C.
From the very first appointment, Dr. McGonigle's goal was clear: get Massiah back to the game he loved safely and successfully. Unfortunately, the diagnosis was severe: a torn ACL and Meniscus, surgery would be necessary. The high-energy, football-loving kid who had always lit up the field suddenly looked defeated, his bright smile gone, replaced by sadness in his deep brown eyes. Dr. McGonigle helped reassure Massiah and his family that he wanted to help him get back on the field as soon as possible.
Massiah underwent two surgeries in September and December 2024 to repair his ACL and meniscus. This was the start of a long recovery. For weeks, Massiah couldn't stand or walk, and for a time, could only rest in bed. The days were lonely, and the usual excitement of school, teammates, and friends felt out of reach.
"It was a very hard and trying time," Massiah's mom shared. "But Cheslee Bloyd was always there for Massiah and our family—bringing snacks, support, and encouragement—even when he felt depressed and alone."
Through diligent care, regular follow-ups, and unwavering support, Massiah gradually regained strength. Dr. McGonigle continually worked to improve his recovery plan, tailoring each step to ensure the best possible outcome. After a full year of rehabilitation, Massiah is back, stronger, resilient, and ready to play his senior season at Green County High School. Standing tall on the field once more, he's a testament to determination, perseverance, and the power of a supportive care team.
"Thanks to Dr. McGonigle and Cheslee Bloyd, I'm back on the field doing what I love. I couldn't have done this without them," Massiah shared proudly.
