For Dr. Owen McGonigle, the most rewarding part of being a sports medicine specialist is helping athletes of all ages return to the sports and activities they love, whether it’s a high school student-athlete chasing collegiate dreams or a weekend warrior getting back into the game. Patients often describe him as compassionate, thorough, and deeply committed to their recovery and long-term goals.
His Approach to Care
Dr. McGonigle believes that great outcomes start with open communication and a full understanding of each patient’s goals. He takes a collaborative, full-circle approach to care, listening closely, educating patients about their options, and developing treatment plans tailored to their needs. Whenever possible, he recommends non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy, bracing, and guided injections.
When surgery is necessary, Dr. McGonigle offers advanced, minimally invasive techniques to help patients achieve a smooth recovery and lasting results.

Dr. McGonigle specializes in diagnosing the root cause of these concerns and creating a personalized treatment plan to help athletes of all ages get back to the activities they love.
Dr. McGonigle primarily treats sports-related injuries of the hip, knee, and shoulder, as well as joint problems that may require replacement. Patients often come to him with symptoms such as:
- Pain, stiffness, or swelling in the hip, knee, or shoulder
- Difficulty walking, running, or performing sports movements
- Joint instability or locking
- Reduced range of motion or weakness
- Persistent discomfort after an acute injury or overuse
Many of Dr. McGonigle’s patients that experience these symptoms often suffer from common problems/injuries like:
- Muscle, tendon, or ligament tears
- Fractures
- ACL and other ligament injuries
- Hip, knee, and shoulder injuries
- Joint dislocations
- Sprains and strains
- Overuse injuries (e.g., tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow)
- Osteoarthritis or joint degeneration requiring joint replacement
Education & Expertise
Originally from Wayland, Massachusetts, Dr.
McGonigle completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame
before earning his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. He
completed his residency through the Tufts Affiliated Hospitals Orthopaedic
Residency Program and advanced fellowship training in Sports Medicine at the
American Sports Medicine Institute, one of the top programs of its kind in the
country.
Dr. McGonigle is fellowship trained and board certified in orthopedic surgery. He serves as the team physician for Bluegrass Orthopaedics’ partner high schools and universities across Kentucky, working closely with athletic trainers, coaches, physical therapists, and student-athletes to ensure safe and effective care.
He is also an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM).
Beyond The Operating Room
Outside of medicine, Dr. McGonigle enjoys spending time with his family and staying active through racquet sports, especially tennis and pickleball. He often competes in pickleball tournaments alongside his wife and fellow Bluegrass Orthopaedics providers.

I went to Dr. McGonigle Friday for my one year follow up I would encourage anyone with knee issues to make an appointment with Bluegrass Orthopaedics! As one of the most caring professionals I have ever seen when he walked in the it was for me like seeing a friend as always he was very professional! He showed me my xrays checked the incision and advised he likes to check on patients every 5 years or so to check the knee but if I had any problems with either knee to contact them before 5 years like he knew my aversion to Doctors! Thank you Dr. McGonigle!
Bluegrass is Wonderful
I was treated with kindness and compassion. Dr. McGonigle explained the problem with my knee. He did not push surgery and we tried other treatments first. When I ended up having to have surgery he explained the procedure clearly and answered all of my questions. I would recommend Bluegrass Orthopedics to anyone for orthopedic needs. They are all wonderful.
Pain-Free After Years of Trying
Dr. McGonigle spends the time needed to see you and answer your questions. After seeing several doctors with my complaints of hip and leg pain, Dr McGonigle found the problem, did surgery and I am now pain free after years of trying to get answers and help from other doctors. He is excellent.
