BGO Comeback Champion:  Troy Lee Thomas

April 19, 2023

For four years, Troy suffered from a progressively worsening hip. Despite being a high school basketball coach and teacher, he was finding it increasingly difficult to walk. In his 40s, he was in the best shape of his life, regularly exercising and watching his diet. However, by the time he turned 49, he began to experience small right hip pain, which he initially ignored. As the pain intensified, he found himself limping and having to ice his hip twice a day. His life was changing for the worse, and he struggled to walk or even drive without experiencing pain.

"In 2022, I could hardly walk anymore. I was also a high school basketball coach and teacher at Burgin Independent School. All through my life, I always exercised from running 5K's, 10K's or half marathons. I would lift weights 4 days a week and watch what I ate. I was in the best shape of my life in my 40's."
Troy played college basketball at Morehead State University from 1991-1995 and then he played 4 years of semi-pro basketball.
"I was always in shape because I took my health seriously. I truly loved exercising!"

Troy's hip pain even affected his work, as he couldn't stand for long periods, and his foot would often go numb. It was only after his superintendent, Mr. Will Begley, recommended Dr. Christensen that Troy decided to seek help. Thad Holway, who had also had both hips replaced by Dr. Christensen, convinced Troy that his life would change for the better if he got a hip replacement.

"If I was in my vehicle driving down the road and I hit a bump or I would cross the railroad tracks, my hip pain would shoot all over my right leg. I had a hard time walking and my life was totally changing from good to worse."

"Thad told me, 'My life would change if I would go see Dr. Christensen.'"

Despite being nervous, Troy made an appointment with Dr. Christensen, who recommended a hip replacement. The surgery was a success, and Dr. Christensen and his staff were professional and supportive throughout the process. After completing physical therapy, Troy lost 35 lbs. and was able to walk 5-6 miles a day with no hip pain. He feels like he's 20 years old again, and he's grateful for the decision to get a hip replacement. Troy encourages anyone who needs a hip replacement to contact Dr. Christensen and his staff, as it was one of the best decisions he ever made.

"Dr. Christensen and his staff were so professional before, during, and after the surgery. They truly took care of me. His staff still contacts me today to make sure everything is going well. I feel like I am 20 years old with my new hip!"
"I am so grateful to have made this decision to get a hip replacement. It has totally changed my longevity. I would encourage anyone who needs a hip replacement to contact Dr. Christensen and his staff because it was one of the best decisions that I could ever make in my life. I thank God for leading me to Dr. Christensen and his staff for giving me a new hip and loving life again and allowing me to do things that I love doing once again."
