Dr. Christian P. Christensen is a leading expert in joint replacement who understands how deeply chronic hip and knee pain can affect daily life. He is dedicated to helping patients regain their independence and confidence so they can return to the activities that move them — whether that’s golfing, gardening, or simply walking without discomfort. Patients often describe Dr. Christensen as compassionate, attentive, and deeply committed to their well-being.
Dr. Christensen’s philosophy of care centers on listening first and treating the whole person, not just the joint. He believes patients should feel informed, supported, and comfortable at every stage of their care journey. His approach combines advanced surgical expertise with compassion and clear communication, ensuring that patients fully understand their treatment options.
Whenever possible, Dr. Christensen recommends non-surgical management to help patients find relief. When surgery is needed, he offers state-of-the-art techniques including minimally invasive direct anterior hip replacement and muscle-sparing knee approaches, designed to promote faster recovery and improved long-term outcomes. He also performs complex revision surgeries for patients with failed or problematic joint replacements.
For patients who wish, he is honored to offer prayer before surgery, reflecting his deep respect for both the physical and spiritual aspects of healing. He performs most surgeries at Bluegrass Specialty Surgery Center, combining compassionate, concierge-style care with the latest infection-prevention technology to provide patients with the safest and most effective recovery possible.
Many of Dr. Christensen’s patients come to him with symptoms like:
Often, these symptoms are linked to arthritis, cartilage or ligament injury, or even loosening from a past joint replacement. Dr. Christensen focuses on carefully evaluating your condition, listening to your concerns, and creating a personalized treatment plan, and for many patients, total joint replacement provides a pathway back to a pain-free, active lifestyle.
Originally from Upstate New York, Dr. Christensen earned his undergraduate degree in Physics from Hamilton College before completing his medical degree at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He went on to complete residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery at Duke University, followed by advanced fellowship training in Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction at New England Baptist Hospital, one of the nation’s leading centers for joint replacement care.
Dr. Christensen is board certified in orthopedic surgery and has been at the forefront of innovation throughout his career. He is the primary developer of the Exactech Triverse Total Knee System and the Signature Cambridge Partial Knee Replacement, both designed to improve implant performance and longevity.
An accomplished researcher and educator, Dr. Christensen has authored more than 20 peer-reviewed publications and presented at national orthopedic meetings on topics related to total joint replacement, surgical technique, and implant design. He continues to believe strongly in the importance of ongoing research to provide patients with the most advanced and effective treatment options available.
Dr. Christensen is also an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), organizations that promote excellence and innovation in joint reconstruction and orthopedic care.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Christensen enjoys physical fitness and longevity, as well as hiking, golf, travel, and spending time with his family and two dogs, Bruno and Cosby. He also serves his local community through volunteer work at Tates Creek Presbyterian Church.
