Keeping Your Body Prepared for Sports During the Spring Dead Period

Shutdowns are upon us. Schools are closed for the next few weeks. March Madness is canceled. The Boys and Girls Sweet 16 is indefinitely postponed. And now we have a dead period. The KHSAA instituted this dead period until April 12th. So now what?

Control what we can control.

It is frustrating that spring sports are not going to be going ahead like we are used to, but we need to be ready to get on the field once they start back up.

We can't control that the dead period happened, but we can control how to stay prepared for the rest of the upcoming season. Spring student-athletes have worked hard to get to where they are at now, but if they do not continue that preparation, they won't be ready when they go back out on the field.

Over the next 4 weeks, spring sports student-athletes have two options - prepare their body for the games that are coming, or relax. If they do relax, they won't be as prepared, and may even increase risk of injury when they step back on the field.

It is vital that student-athletes keep their bodies ready. Maintain flexibility. Maintain strength. Increase stamina. They may not have the facilities that they are used to, but they can be creative. Instead of running on the track, run on the sidewalk in the neighborhoods. Instead of passing to their lacrosse teammates, get 1,000 passes a day off a wall. Throw baseball and softballs with family. They may not have access to the facility, but they do have the opportunity to improve.

We can not control that the dead period happened, but we can control how ready we will be when we step back out on the field.
